Opening RootsMagic 8 and Newer
RootsMagic 10 has the same file extension (.rmtree) as these versions, but a different file format. When the old RootsMagic database is opened it will let you know that it needs to convert the file to the new format. You will also be advised to make a backup in the previous version before converting. If you continue RootsMagic will convert the file and open it. If you cancel, RootsMagic will not convert the file (it will leave it in the older format and won't open the file).
Note: Once the old RootsMagic database is converted to the new file format it will no longer open in the previous version.
The old RootsMagic backup (.rmbackup) needs to be restored inside of RootsMagic by going to Files, Restore from backup. During the restore process it will create a new (.rmtree) file, convert the file, and leave the old RootsMagic backup file intact.
Opening RootsMagic 7 and Older
RootsMagic 10 has a different file format and extension for database (.rmtree) and backup (.rmbackup) files. The old RootsMagic database (.rmgc) cannot be opened inside this version of RootsMagic. The old RootsMagic database (.rmgc) file needs to be imported into RootsMagic by creating a new file. The new database will then have the correct (.rmtree) file extension.
The old RootsMagic backup (.rmgb) needs to be restored inside of RootsMagic by going to Files, Restore from backup. During the restore process it will create a new (.rmtree) file and leave the old RootsMagic backup file intact.
