A citation tells you where you found information about a person or event. First choose the person, family, or fact you want to document. Then add a new source, cite another page of a source you already entered, or use a citation you have saved.
Attach a citation in Edit Person
1.Open the person in Edit Person.
2.Select the item you want to document. Use a specific fact, such as Birth, when the citation supports that fact; use the person's general sources for information about the person as a whole. A family citation concerns the couple or family.
3.Open Sources for that item. You can use its Sources button or source column. In the Edit Person Sources view, select the intended item in the filter before adding a citation.
4.Check the list's heading or filter. This is the item to which the citation will be attached.
5.Choose Add with SourceWizard, Add new, Cite existing, or Paste as described below.

Create a new source and citation
Choose Add with SourceWizard to begin with a description, URL, or pasted citation and receive suggestions. SourceWizard can also locate information you have already entered. See SourceWizard.
Choose Add new to select a source type yourself. Choose a template or Free Form, enter the information about your source and the page or record you used, and check the preview. Click Save and enter the source and citation names when asked. See Adding a source for the steps.
When you finish, the citation appears in the Sources list for the person, family, or fact you chose at the start. Check that it is listed in the right place.

Cite an existing source
1.Choose Cite existing in the item's citation list.
2.Find and select the source. Search for a recognizable part of its name if the list is long. Check that it describes the material you consulted.
3.Continue to that source's citations. The list includes saved citations and <<CREATE NEW CITATION>>.
4.For the same page or record, select the existing citation, inspect its formatted reference, and confirm the choice. RootsMagic links that citation to the selected item.
5.For a different page or record, choose <<CREATE NEW CITATION>> and continue. Fill in Citation Details for the new page or record. Leave Master Source unchanged unless you need to correct the book, collection, or other source for all its citations.
6.Read the citation preview, save the citation, and give it a name you will recognize. Check that it appears in the Sources list for the person or fact you are documenting.

Do not reuse a citation for page 24 and then change it to page 91 to support a different fact. That would change every use of the page-24 citation. Create another citation under the source, or copy the similar citation and edit the copy. See Using Sources and Citations.
Paste a memorized citation
Select the citation you want to use and click Memorize. Then open Sources for the person, family, or fact that needs the citation and choose Paste. Check the displayed citation before choosing how to paste it.
Reuse citation adds the same citation to the person or fact you are documenting. A later correction will appear everywhere you use that citation. Paste copy makes a separate citation that you can change, for example to cite another page. Both citations still refer to the same source: correcting the book title will correct it in both.
After choosing Paste copy, change the page or record details and the citation name as needed. Check that the citation appears for the right person or fact. See Using Sources and Citations for examples.
Create a citation on the Sources page
1.Open Sources in the main navigation.
2.Find the source and click its Citations count to open its citation list.
3.Choose Add in the citation list.
4.Enter the citation-specific fields and any research notes or comments. For a free-form source, enter the page or record reference in Specific item. Check Master Source before editing it: those fields apply to all citations of this source.
5.Review the formatted reference, save the citation, and complete its name.
The citation is saved, but it is not yet listed as evidence for anyone in your tree. Open Sources for the person or fact it supports, choose Cite existing, and select the source and citation you just saved.
Check the result
Select the attached citation and review its details. Add media for the record if needed. To evaluate its evidence for this particular use, choose Quality in the Edit Person citation editor; see Citation quality.
If you cannot find the citation, clear the search box and check which person or fact the list is showing. A citation added to the person generally will not appear under Birth unless you add it there too. If you saved the citation on the main Sources page, use Cite existing to add it to the right person or fact.
