Choose Prompt type in AI Prompt Editor to set the kind of item a saved prompt uses. Choose the actual item with Change in the AI Prompts window. These are separate decisions: a Citation prompt needs a particular citation, not just the name of its source.
Event information and notes
Where the Events list is available, choose No events, Basic only, or All events. Other options let you include dates, places, descriptions, and notes. Read the preview to check that it includes the facts you need; Basic only may leave some out.
Event notes and the separate Notes, Text, or Comments controls are not interchangeable. For example, turning on a person's Notes does not replace the Event notes switch. Choose the categories that contain the material the AI needs.
The switches control which recorded information is included. They do not ask the AI to retrieve missing records. A prompt may therefore have an empty section even when that category is enabled.
Person prompts
Use a Person prompt for an individual outline, biography draft, or research questions. Check the person's name beside Change before copying. Change opens RootsMagic Explorer. Use the Filter field or the list to find a person, check the family and event summary on the right, and click Select. This helps distinguish people with similar names.
The Person panel lets you choose names, events, dates, places, descriptions, notes, sources, and relatives. Names starts with Primary only, which leaves out alternate names. Include spouses, children, parents, or siblings when their information helps answer your question; leave them out when it is not needed.
For a short outline, start with the person's events and the relevant date and place switches. For a research review, consider whether notes and sources contain essential qualifications or conflicting information that should accompany the facts.
Family prompts
Use a Family prompt for a couple and their children. Change opens Select family, showing Father, Mother, and Marr Date columns, with family members on the right. Choose the correct couple, especially when someone has more than one spouse, and confirm the selection.
The Family panel provides Couple names, Events and its date/place/description/note controls, Children, Notes, and Sources. The generated preview separates the family overview from family events. Check both the parents and children before using the result.
Place prompts
Use a Place prompt for a place overview, place-name questions, or research planning tied to a locality. Change opens Select place. Select the intended locality and check its full name and details before confirming.
For a Place prompt, you can include Coordinates (its map location), Notes about the place, Events and their details, and People connected to it. A map location can distinguish places with the same name. Place notes may explain older names or other useful information.
After choosing a place, read the summary and information in the preview. Check any historical claims the AI makes against your research sources. A present-day place name or map location does not tell you what its boundaries were in the past.
Source prompts
Use a Source prompt to examine the source as a whole, rather than a specific citation of it. Change opens Select source. Select the source, inspect its details on the right, and click OK.
The Source panel provides Repository, Text (source text), Comments (source comments), Citations (linked citations), People (linked people), and Events with date/place/description/note controls. Include source text when you want the AI to consider recorded content rather than just a bibliographic identification.
A source title or bibliography entry is not the source's complete contents. Check the preview before asking for extraction or evaluation; the AI can only work from the material you supply or otherwise make available to it.
Citation prompts
Use a Citation prompt for the specific reference and details supporting a statement. Change first opens Select source. Choose the source and click OK, then choose the required entry in Select citation. Check the citation details, not only the source title.
The Citation panel provides Text (citation text), Comments (citation comments), People (linked people), and Events with date/place/description/note controls. The preview identifies the selected citation and shows its formatted reference. Include recorded text or comments when the reference alone is insufficient for the task.
For Conflict Analysis, supply the relevant conflicting information rather than expecting the AI to infer it from a citation name. For Evidence Classification or Proof Argument, verify the reasoning and original records yourself before adopting any conclusion.
Media prompts
The Media panel provides Caption, Description, Date, Filename, linked People, Families, Places, Sources, Citations, and Events. Scroll the Data to Include panel when lower controls are out of view.
The text data describes the media item and its links. An image is supplied separately with the image-copy button in AI Prompts. Including Filename in the text does not give an external AI service access to that file.
