Before sharing your family history, choose the people and details you want to send. Check the finished report, file, or website, as each has its own choices about what to include.
Choose the people
Select the people, family, or group you want to share. If you use a Rules group, refresh it and check the names. Check each person's Living box before using options that hide living people. A blank death date alone does not tell you whether that box is checked.
Check facts and notes
Check the settings for private facts and note text in {curly brackets}. Make sure they will be left out if you do not want to share them. The brackets do not hide text from someone who can open your RootsMagic database.
Read notes, descriptions, source text, research notes, and comments as well as names and dates. They may mention living people or contain addresses you do not want to share. Check Preparer settings if the report includes your contact details.
Check pictures and documents
Open the pictures and documents you plan to include. Hiding a name in a report will not erase it from a scanned certificate or photo caption. Check which pictures and website links will be shared.
When using AI Prompt Builder, read the completed instructions and information, and check any picture, before pasting them into an AI service. The choices you made in RootsMagic may still include details you do not want to send.
Take extra care when sending a whole tree
A backup keeps your tree so you can recover it later. It can include private information even if you chose to leave that information out of a report. The same is true of a copy of your database.
Shareable Drive includes a copy of your database. Follow that topic's privacy instructions before giving someone the copy. Preventing changes to the copy does not prevent someone from reading private information in it.
If you use GEDCOM, MyRootsMagic, or HTML Website, check the privacy choices for that particular method. Open and check the result before you send or publish it.
Check the final result
Open the exact report, file, website pages, or pasted text you plan to share. Check examples of living people, private notes, private facts, source comments, and pictures if your tree includes them. If you find something that should be left out, correct the settings and create a new copy to share.
