Edit a source when you need to correct something about the book, certificate, website, or other material you used. For example, correcting a book's title here corrects it in every citation of that book. To correct a page number or a particular entry instead, see Editing a citation.
Open the source
1.Choose Sources from the menu on the left of the main window.
2.If the page is displaying a source's citations, use the back arrow beside the heading to return to all sources.
3.Find and select the source. Its information appears on the right.
4.Read the source type and name at the top to check that you have selected the right source.
You can also change Master Source while editing a citation. For example, if you correct a book title there, RootsMagic corrects the title in every citation of that book, not just the citation you have open.
Correct the printed reference
Choose the citation-fields section and look under Master Source. If you used a template, correct the author, title, publisher, or other information in the appropriate box. If you used Free Form, change the Footnote, Short footnote, and Bibliography text yourself. Read all three previews to check the result.
Source Name is the name you see in RootsMagic's lists. It is separate from the title printed in a citation. If you need to correct both, change the Source Name and the Title under Master Source, then check the preview.
If you consulted a different book, edition, or collection, usually you should add a new source. Changing an existing source to describe the new material would also change all the citations you already made from the old material.
Rename the source or change its reference number
Click the pencil at the upper right of the heading. Change the source name to something you will recognize in a list. You can also enter a reference number if you number your paper or digital files.

Edit text, comments, and links
Click the text/page button. Use Source text for wording you copied from the source, and Source comments for your observations about it. For wording or comments about just one page or entry, open that citation and use Research notes or Detail comments.
Use the links section to add pictures, website links (WebTags), and repositories, such as the library or archive that holds the source. A book's title-page picture belongs with the source; a picture of one cited entry usually belongs with that citation.
Open Source Used to see which people, families, and facts cite this source. Check the list if you are unsure who will be affected by your correction.
Check the source's citations
Click the number in the source's Citations column, then select a citation. Read the preview to check the corrected source information together with the page or record details. If you changed the source type or the way references are written, check several citations, including ones with different details.
To change the template used for this source, see Source template converter. To combine sources or citations you entered more than once, see Merging Sources and Citations.
