Use Find Everywhere on the Search page to look for words anywhere in your tree, including notes, sources, places, pictures' descriptions, and tasks. It can find a person mentioned in a note even if you have not entered that person separately.

Just enter the text you want to search for. If you use more than one field (with the AND and OR options), the various text pieces must be in the same record (person, name, note, place, etc) for RootsMagic to select that record as a match. So if you search for:

Smith

AND

William

then RootsMagic will find names with both Smith and William in it.

If you want the case (capitalization) to match what you type, you can also check the "Match case" checkbox.

Results appear on the right, grouped by where the words were found, such as people, notes, or sources. The matching words are highlighted in red.

Click a result's link to open and edit the information. You can also save or print the results.

Check what the search found

Open a result to see what it describes before editing. A result may be a note or source rather than a person. When using AND, both words must appear in the same item; a word in one note and another word in a different note will not match.

Use a short, distinctive phrase first. If a name is absent from a person's name fields but mentioned in a note, this search can help locate the note. Use Basic Search when you specifically want a person by name or record number.
