Keyboard commands depend on the active window and on whether you are navigating or editing text. Click the RootsMagic window you want to use before trying a shortcut. If a dialog is open, finish or close it before using the main window's commands.

Navigating with KeyTips

Press and release Alt on Windows or Command (Cmd) on Mac to display KeyTips on the main window or Edit Person. Small labels appear beside the available pages and views. Release Alt or Command before pressing the key shown in a label. A label can contain a letter, a number, or more than one letter; enter a multi-letter label in the displayed order.

For example, on the People page, tap Alt on Windows or Command on Mac and then press 2 when the Family tab shows 2. This switches to Family view. On Edit Person, tap the same platform-specific key and then press N when Notes shows N to open that person's Notes page. Follow the labels on the screen you are using rather than assuming that every window has the same keys.

Menu accelerators and text shortcuts

On Windows, you can also choose a menu command by holding Alt and pressing its underlined letter. These are called accelerator keys. Unlike KeyTips, you keep Alt held down. Look at the menu you are using, because the same letter can mean different things on different pages. On Mac, press Control+F2 to move to the system menu, then use the arrow keys.

When the cursor is inside a note, use the note editor's commands. Its right-click menu displays available shortcuts, including Format > Strikethrough, Superscript, Subscript, and Small Caps. The Windows menu lists Ctrl+Shift+X, Ctrl+Shift+=, Ctrl+=, and Ctrl+Shift+K respectively. Clear Formatting is listed as Ctrl+Space. Select the intended text before applying a format.

Inside a note, Ctrl+Y means Redo and Ctrl+H means Replace. In the main window, Ctrl+H means Go to home person instead. Check where you are typing before using a shortcut. See Notes for editing instructions.
