There may be times when you find multiple copies of the same person in your database. This can happen when importing a GEDCOM into an existing file, or simply by manually adding a person more than once. RootsMagic provides tools to help merge those duplicate records together.
Prepare and verify a merge
Back up the tree before merging. Compare names, dates, places, relatives, citations, and notes; two people with the same name can be distinct individuals. Choose Manual merge for a pair you have already identified, or Duplicate search merge to examine suggested pairs.
Choose the primary record deliberately and review any conflicting facts before accepting the merge. Afterward, inspect spouses, parent sets, children, repeated events, and attachments. A merge combines records; it does not decide which conflicting statement is historically correct.
When a suggested pair is definitely different people, mark it as not a match. Use Not duplicates list if later evidence requires that pair to be considered again.
