Choose Sources from the menu on the left of the main window to see the sources and citations in your tree. Here you can add a book or other source, correct information, and see which people and facts use it.

Browse sources and citations

The main list shows each source's name and Citations count. Select a source to edit it on the right.

Click the number in a source's Citations column to see its citations. The source name appears above the list. Click the back arrow there to return to all sources. Add records

From the source list, choose Add > Add using SourceWizard for guided entry or Add > Add new source manually to select a source type. Both routes create a source and citation. See SourceWizard and Adding a source.

From an existing source's citation list, choose Add to enter another citation under that source. See Adding a citation.

Records created here are available for reuse, but adding them on this page does not attach them to a person or fact. Open the intended item's Sources list in Edit Person and choose Cite existing to attach the saved citation.

Use the editor

The citation-fields control opens the fields that produce the formatted reference. The text/page control opens source text, research notes, and comments. The links control opens media, repositories, WebTags, and Used lists. The pencil at the upper right of the header opens names and optional reference numbers.

Quality is available when the citation is opened for a particular person, family, or fact in Edit Person. It is not a database-wide rating on this page. See Editing a source, Editing a citation, and Citation quality.

Counts and uses

Citations counts saved citation records, not facts. A citation may be linked to several facts or not yet linked anywhere. Open the source's or citation's Used list in the links section to inspect its attachments.

In a Used list, you can find a particular person or fact, add the citation to another fact, remove it from a fact, or correct which fact it belongs to. Select the right row before using a button. See Used Lists for what each button does.

Manage the collection

The Tools commands depend on whether the source list or citation list is open. To copy a source, work in the source list; to copy a citation or add it to multiple people, work in the citation list. See Using Sources and Citations.

Use Tools > Print Sources for the Source List report. For cleanup, see Merging Sources and Citations. For changing how a source is formatted, see Source template converter. Back up the database before merging or converting sources.
