First check which people and information you chose to include. Then check how the report looks. Change one setting at a time and create the report again so you can see whether it helped.

A person or family is missing

Check the starting person or couple and the selected generation count. When Include is set to a group or selected list, inspect that selection. Refresh a Rules group if its membership should reflect recent changes.

Check whether the report follows ancestors, descendants, or both. An ancestor chart does not include every relative in the database. A family report may concern a different spouse or parent set from the one you intended. See Selecting people and Groups.

A fact, note, or source is missing

Check where you entered the information. For example, a source listed for the person generally may not appear as evidence for Birth. To document the birth, add the citation to the Birth fact.

Check the report's choices for facts, notes, private information, and living people. To include citations, check Source options. Different reports offer different choices.

For unexpected wording in a narrative, check the fact's sentence preview and any local customization. See Fact sentences and Customizing sentences.

Names overlap or the chart prints too small

Reduce the generation count for a trial chart. Increase box or generation widths, adjust spacing, and choose a readable font size. For a descendant fan, compare Size Wedges by Descendants and inspect families with many children.

Fit to Chart sizes the chart page; Fit on Page scales the result to the printer's paper. A wall chart reduced to one sheet can have unreadable text. Use multiple-page printing or save a PDF at the intended dimensions.

A photograph is absent or cropped

Check that pictures are enabled where supported, that the intended primary or scrapbook image is selected, and that RootsMagic can open the original file. A red X indicates a broken media link.

In Picture settings, compare Fit inside box with Fill box. Fill can crop the edges to occupy the available area. See Fix broken media links if the file cannot be opened.

The saved or pasted result looks different

Create the report again after any changes, then save or copy that new version. Choose a file type that the program you will use can open. PDF usually keeps the page layout. A word processor or other program may rearrange text and pictures when you paste or open an editable file.

Open the exported file or inspect the pasted content, including sources, special characters, long rows, and pictures. Changes made outside RootsMagic do not update the tree. See Saving Reports and Report Viewer.
