Tasks allow you to keep track of the actual research you have done, or that you need to do for a person, family, or any other aspect of your family history. Tasks let you set goals, and keep track of the results, while tying the task to the people, families, sources, places, media or other records which pertain to that task.

You can narrow the task list by date, priority, status, or words in the goal or results. You can also show tasks for a particular person, place, source, or other item. Print the resulting list when useful, for example before a research trip.

You can also assign tasks to folders, which lets you group common tasks together like a research log for a particular topic. A task can be placed in more than folder.

Turn a research question into a task

Give the task a name that identifies the question, such as Find a birth record for Ellen Harris. In Goal/Details, record the person, place, date range, record sets to search, and what would answer the question. Link the task to the relevant people, facts, places, or repositories.

In Results, record what you searched and what you found, including searches that did not find a record. Add sources or media where appropriate, update the status and dates, and state the next step if the question remains open.

Use folders to organize a project or research trip and filters to identify its unfinished work. Print a Research Log when you need the tasks in one folder together.
