RootsMagic has two place fields for each fact, Place and Place Details. The Place field is where you would enter the city or town township or townland, the county or parish or district, the state or province, and the country. Since there are countries which have fewer or more place divisions that others, RootsMagic doesn't enforce a set number of fields.
When you enter a place name into a place field, it is added automatically to the Place List. The next time you begin typing in the Place field, RootsMagic will automatically provide suggestions from the place list to complete the place name as you type. If the suggested name is close, you can use the arrow keys to move down the list of places if you know there is an exact match, rather than continuing to type the name. You can also click on the Place list icon at the end of the Place field to Select a place name from the Place list. RootsMagic also provides a CountyCheck feature (which you can turn off if you want) which will let you know if you enter a county (US, Canada, UK, or Australia) that didn't exist on the date you entered for the event.
The Places page is the central hub for working with places. Click the Places tab on the left side of the screen. In the Places page, you can edit place names, remove places, print a place list report, merge places, view an online map or GeoCode the places in your database.
The Place Details field is where you would enter the name of a church, a cemetery or other facility where an event occurred, or you could enter the address of the person involved. Place Details field entries are stored in the Place Details list associated with a specific place (they are not stored as a general item accessible elsewhere.)
The next time you begin typing in the Place details field, RootsMagic will automatically provide suggestions from the place details list to complete the place details name as you type. If the suggested name is close, you can use the arrow keys to move down the list of Place details names if you know there is an exact match, rather than continuing to type the name. You can also click on the Place details list icon at the end of the Place Details field to Select a place details name from the Place details list.
